More in depth information....
This regatta allows skippers to exercise their ingenuity in creating the fastest model sailing yacht from common items and at least one empty beer can (soda can for kids class). To ensure fair competition, all boats must be able to fit within the provided “bucket” and only be constructed of the provided materials. All boats will be measured and examined for compliance prior to racing.
Competitors may elect to sail in the following classes (subject to approval by the race committee, and minimum number of eight entries per class):
- Root Beer Class (for children 12 and under with adult supervision)
- Sport Class (Boat must have a beer can in its original shape used in construction)
- Grand Prix (Must fit in bucket and use materials provided)(Advanced class).
- Sponsor Challenge (for local businesses, various sponsorship levels available)
Entrants will receive buckets and the materials with which to build their boats at the Skippers’ Meeting on August 8, 2008 to be held at the Eastport Democratic Club (525 State St, Annapolis, MD 21403-3238, United States (Map) Phone: (410) 263-2022). Additionally, class rules and sailing instructions will be presented and reviewed. It is strongly recommended competitors attend to learn about the new rules concerning this year’s regatta.
On the day of the event, competitors will have an “open course” practice session prior to racing to work out any final details of their design. The race committee will also be on hand for mandatory boat measurement prior to the regatta (all boats must fit in the bucket in racing trim).
Racing will be conducted in a “round robin” format, allowing all competitors in a class to race one another and participate in multiple races. Class winners will be determined by the best score across all races. The Grand Prix class winner will have the skipper and boat name engraved on the perpetual trophy hosted by the Boatyard Bar and Grill. Other prizes will be awarded to the top competitors.
